APUCV demands the release of university teachers and students detained in Venezuela

Caracas, Aug 11 (EFE).- The Association of Professors of the Central University of Venezuela (Apucv) demanded this Sunday the Release of one of its members, as well as six students of that institution who are among the more than 2,400 detainees left by the post-electoral crisis in the country, some arrested in protests and others in their residences.

Through X, the union stated that Professor Salvador Rivera, associated with the university’s School of Psychology, is one of those arrested, the same as the sextet of UCV students, about which he did not provide further details.

“We demand the immediate and full freedom of all those arrested,” stressed the APUCV, which called for an activity next Thursday inside the university, together with relatives of the people who were arrested after the elections of July 28, labeled by the Government as “terrorists.”

Of the total of 2,400 arrests reported by the Executive, the NGO Foro Penal – which leads the defense of those considered political prisoners in the country – has verified 1,303, including 116 adolescents, 170 women, 14 indigenous people and 16 people with disabilities.

In the context of the protests – unleashed after the majority opposition denounced fraud in the elections – violent acts and vandalism were recorded, resulting in 24 civilian deaths – according to the NGO Provea – as well as two military deaths and nearly a hundred security agents injured.

The National Electoral Council (CNE), which says it suffered a cyber attack on election day, has yet to publish disaggregated results confirming the victory of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, a silence that has been questioned by numerous countries and organizations, including the Carter Center, which participated as an observer in the elections.
