APS-C Lightweight Flagship Canon EOS R7 Quick Test!

Canon’s camera product positioning has always been quite clear. Following the semi-professional EOS R5 and the EOS R3 designed for extreme sports, this year Canon took the lead in bringing you the APS-C flagship EOS R7. Although the R7 and the M50 mkII launched by Canon in 2020 are also APS-C mirrorless cameras, they are also very different in function and positioning. The EOS R7 is a camera designed for sports and ecological photography enthusiasts. Filming, there are many functions that will give everyone a new understanding of the APS-C camera.

Canon EOS R7 uses the latest 32.5 megapixel sensor, and the same level as EOS R3 Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus II (DAF II) technology, can provide up to 100% x 100% AF coverage and up to 651 AF area. The fastest continuous shooting can reach 30 frames per second, which is suitable for shooting high-speed subjects, such as sports or animals. In addition, the R7 supports uncropped 4K UHD 30P (7K supersampling) video clips and non-cropped 4K UHD 60P video clips, which are rare in APS-C cameras, giving users great flexibility in filming, so there is no need to worry regarding Cropping occurs when going to 4K 60P.

The author briefly tested the R7’s photographic performance. It is very responsive when the shutter is pressed, and the focusing speed is very fast. Even if the subject changes suddenly, such as a pedestrian or an animal, it can accurately focus on the face and even the eyes. Even if the eyes cannot be focused in time, it will focus on the pedestrian’s body first, and then focus on the eyes first, and the response is very fast.

In terms of filming, the resolution is oversampled from 7K to 4K, so the picture quality at 4K UHD 30P is very detailed. If you are shooting ecology, users can also use 4K UHD 60P with cropping, which is convenient for shooting distant subjects and can be used as an additional focal length. When shooting 4K UHD 30P (7K oversampling) clips, there is a slight overheating issue following 1 hour of shooting.

As object focus becomes more important, almost many cameras have this feature. The R7 is equipped with priority intelligent tracking and identification of people, animals and vehicles, which is actually derived from the EOS iTR AF X of the EOS R3, using Deep Learning. Speaking of vehicle priority, the R7 also comes with a shooting function, which is Panning Shot. Panning shooting refers to shooting by swinging the camera when shooting high-speed subjects, so that the subject is clear, but the background or other scenes appear linear dynamic blur, creating a flowing effect.

In terms of lenses, although the EOS R7 belongs to the APS-C format, it can also use a variety of lenses from the EOS R series, even if the full-frame lens of the EOS R5 is used. It is more convenient for those who play telephoto and like to shoot stage performances or concerts.
