Apple’s upcoming ‘WWDC 2022’… iOS16, Mac, AR headset?

Apple’s developer feast, the World Developers Conference (WWDC 2022), will be held on the 6th (local time). At this event, as in previous years, new Mac products are expected to be announced along with the new mobile operating system ‘iOS16’. There are also observations that an augmented reality (AR) headset will be announced as a surprise.

Earlier, on the 25th of last month, Apple announced that it would hold the WWDC event non-face-to-face for five days from June 6th (local time) to June 10th with an invitation titled ‘The time for coding is near’.

The new operating system ‘iOS16’ applied to the iPhone is expected to receive updates such as lock screen, notifications, messages, and health features. Bloomberg reporter Mark Grumman, who is famous for rumors regarding Apple, predicted that the lock screen with the always-on function will be provided starting with iOS 16. In addition, widget functions such as weather, calendar, and favorite apps are expected to be added to the lock screen.

Always On refers to a function that displays some information such as time while minimizing power consumption by taking advantage of the OLED screen in which the display element emits light by itself. Currently, smartphones in the Android camp such as Samsung Galaxy adopt this function, but the iPhone series, which introduced OLED in 2017 ‘iPhone X’, has not yet applied this function. According to rumors, the Always On feature is expected to be applied only to the ‘iPhone 14 Pro’ to be released this fall.

In addition, various social functions and a new audio message function are expected to be added in the new Messages app. New features are also expected to be added in the Health app.

It is expected that the multitasking function will be improved in ‘iPadOS16’, the operating system for the iPad. Apple Watch’s ‘watchOS’ predicts the addition of new fitness and health features, sports events, and new watch faces. At the same time, the low-power mode (currently only displaying the time) is expected to be improved so that more various functions can be used.

◇New Mac, M2 chip and AR headset

WWDC, an event for developers, mainly presents content related to Apple’s ecosystem software, but also often reveals new hardware products. Rumors suggest that a new Mac may be revealed at WWDC this year. Mark Grumman predicts that Apple will introduce two new Macs in the middle of this year. The new Mac Pro, Mac mini, and notch design MacBook Air are expected to be included here.

There are also observations that the next-generation version of ‘M1’, which is its own silicon chip, ‘M2’ will appear.

At the same time, attention is also being paid to whether or not to make a surprise announcement of the augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) headsets that Apple has been preparing for a long time. Prior to this WWDC, there were reports that Apple was recently conducting internal tests for AR/VR headsets and demonstrated it at the board of directors.

Regarding this, the US IT media ‘The Verge’ said, “You shouldn’t expect AR/VR headsets to really appear,” but “Even if they aren’t ready to show off their hardware, Apple is clearly focusing on AR and VR, and in 2022, might be the year of another ‘one more thing’ (one more).”
