Apple’s new satellite service will let you ask for help on the road

Last year when Apple launched the iPhones 14 [Plus] e 14 Pro [Max]we saw the arrival of a very cool function related to connectivity and security: the Emergency SOS via satellite (Emergency SOS via satellite).

This year, with the arrival of iPhones 15 [Plus] e 15 Pro [Max]Maçã is launching a new feature: the Roadside Assistance via satellite (something like “Satellite Road Assistance”, as there is no official translation at the moment).

Available at first only in the United States, the main purpose of this new service is to allow you to ask for help in those moments when you are on a road where there is no signal and are experiencing problems with your vehicle, such as a flat tire or one empty tankfor example.

In practice, it works similar to Emergency SOS via satellite: just have a compatible iPhone in an open place, with a clear view of the sky. Then, open the Messages app, type “Roadside” in the contact field and follow the next steps to request help using the satellite connection. Obviously, it will only work if you have no connection via cellular networks or Wi-Fi.

The service will be carried out with the help of AAA (American Automobile Association), which will offer all necessary assistance to drivers. It is worth noting that it will be completely free for those associated with the entity, while for others, the amount will be charged after the end of the service.

The cool thing is that users of iPhones in the 14 line will also be able to count on the new feature, which joins Apple’s satellite services pie. They are free for two years from the iPhone activation date. So far, Apple hasn’t said how much they will cost after that time, but AAA currently charges $65/year for this service.

Expansion of Emergency SOS via satellite

Still on Apple’s services involving the use of a satellite connection, it also confirmed in yesterday’s keynote that Emergency SOS via satellite will be expanded to two new countries later this month: Spain e Switzerland.

Unfortunately, after more than a year of launching the function, Brazil is still left out of this expansion… ????
