Apple is reportedly close to finding a device to install iPhone updates right in the box.
In an attempt to make the experience of purchasing their products even more enjoyable, Apple plans to update iPhones right in their boxes before they leave their store shelves. It was Mark Gurman of Bloomberg who informed us of the existence of this possibility. Indeed, this might solve a problem well known to iPhone owners.
When you buy a new iPhone, it often arrives with an already outdated software version. For example, the very first iPhone 15s should have been running iOS 17.0.1 and not iOS 17. This means that buyers have to spend time updating their new device before they can actually use it, which can be a little frustrating.
Update directly in store
To remedy this, Apple is preparing a new system for its retail stores. They designed a tablet-shaped device on which store employees can place sealed boxes of iPhones. This wireless device can then turn on each iPhone, update its software, then turn it off, all without having to open the packaging.
This means that customers will be able to enjoy their new iPhone immediately without having to spend sometimes more than an hour doing updates before they can use their phone. This new approach is expected to roll out to Apple stores by the end of the year.
However, one question remains: how will Apple ensure that each iPhone’s battery has enough charge for the process to go smoothly?
