In order to meet the requirements of the European Union, Apple is preparing to make a radical decision. Namely splitting your App Store in two.

According to Mark Gurman’s report, Apple is preparing to split the App Store “in two”. In fact, the EU forced Apple to open its App Store to other platforms. Apple must be able to deal with “slideloading” and is already planning to cut its App Store in two.

In the latest edition of his “Power On” newsletter, Gurman explains that Apple is preparing to make changes to the App Store in the EU to comply with the upcoming Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Europe vs. Rest of the World

Apple apparently plans to implement adjustments to meet the new legal obligations in the coming weeks, including splitting the EU App Store from the rest of the world. The deadline for Apple to comply with the DMA is March 7, giving the company just over seven weeks to implement the changes.

Last week, Apple CEO Tim Cook met with European Union competition chief Margrethe Vestager at Apple Park. She reminded Tim Cook of Apple’s looming obligation to allow users to install third-party app stores and allow slideloading in accordance with DMA requirements.

Apple will also be required to give developers the ability to promote their offerings outside of the App Store and use third-party payment systems. The DMA is expected to force Apple to make various significant changes to the way the App Store, FaceTime and Siri work in Europe.
