Who here remembers the “disease of loop“? The saga involving the problem with the speakers of iPhones 7/7 Plus is finally coming to an end, with the Apple starting to notify customers about the settlement agreement payment US$35 million to end the class action in the United States.
Users eligible for payment must have owned an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus between September 16, 2016 e January 3, 2023. Additionally, there must be a documented complaint with Apple about the speaker problems or proof of repair or replacement of the device due to the bug.
Users who qualify for the deal will receive a payment of at least US$50 and no more than US$349. Members of the lawsuit who had AppleCare+ at the time and who did not pay Apple out of pocket for speaker repairs or replacements will receive a payment of up to US$125.
There is no information on when payments will be made — nor how many consumers are eligible to receive the amounts. New details will be released in the website covering information relating to the process.
The case
It all started in 2018, when users noticed problems such as “grayed out” speaker buttons during calls, loss of Siri voice command capabilities, errors in voice recordings, among others. The devices identified as defective by the process were sold between the beginning of 2017 and the end of 2018.
After analysis, it was detected that the iPhone 7’s aluminum chassis was made with low-quality materials that allowed it to flex directly over the audio controller connected to the phone’s logic board. Over time, it was claimed that the solder that connects the audio chip to the logic board resulted in a number of problems, including the failure of “ear disease.” loop”.
Apple had a repair program for devices affected by the problem, which only lasted a few months.
