A Apple today launched the third beta version of iOS 17.1 for developers and, together with it, it was released an official supporting document addressing concerns raised by the French government regarding the iPhone 12’s radiation levels.
According to Apple, the smartphone is safe to use and complies with international regulations and standards designed to limit energy transmission when a device is in close contact with the human body.
The main question was regarding the specific absorption rate (specific absorption rateor SAR) — that is, the amount of electromagnetic energy emitted by the device absorbed by the human body.
Since the product launch in 2020, iPhone 12 has been certified and recognized as meeting or exceeding all applicable SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) regulations and standards around the world. These international regulations and standards are in place to ensure that there are limits on energy transmission when a device is in close contact with the human body.
The test, carried out by the French National Frequency Agency (ANFR), according to Apple, did not take into account the sensors that detect when the iPhone is not in direct contact with the human body — present in the devices for more than a decade.
To address the agency’s concerns, iOS 17.1 will disable the function in France, which may have an impact on the quality of the cellular network in some situations; Apple assures that most users will not notice a significant difference.
iOS 17.1 will include an update for the iPhone 12 aimed at users in France to comply with this specific testing protocol that requires a reduction in power when the device is not in direct contact with the body, such as when it is on a static surface.
The main objective of the update, according to the Cupertino giant, is to ensure that the iPhone 12 is aligned with the specific absorption rate used by ANFR, even when tested at a certain distance from the human body.
Action Button will gain new features in iOS 17.1
The latest beta version of iOS 17.1 also makes the action button the iPhones 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max are more “smart” when the devices are in their owners’ pockets; With the update, the feature will now be more insightful. The information is from 9to5Mac.
In practice, the camera, flashlight, voice recorder, Focus mode and Magnifier functions will no longer be activated when the button is pressed while the iPhone is kept in your pocket.
The change aims to avoid unwanted recordings or images — consequently, reducing battery waste. With the update, you will need to press longer to activate these functions, reducing the likelihood of accidental activations.
However, it’s important to note that this change only affects the Action button. Users may still inadvertently trigger the camera or flashlight from the locked screen while their iPhone is in their pocket. ????
