A new sensor might be coming to the Apple Watch and it will monitor the user’s sweat rate. This is what the new patent application made by the company indicates, detailing a all-new hydration sensor system.
The record is nothing new compared to what was done in 2021, indicating a hydration measurement, which might “measure electrolyte levels in perspiration”. This meter would be very interesting for users to manage water consumption during training, for example.
The new patent, found by PatentlyApple, covers “systems, devices and methods for calculating a user’s sweating metric.” So it can be activated by detecting sweat and monitoring your hydration levels during exercise.
The filing says: “In some embodiments, a device may include a perspiration sensor having first and second electrodes positioned on an external surface of the device facing the skin. The capacitance circuit can measure a capacitance between the electrodes, which can be used to calculate the perspiration metric. In some embodiments, the device defines a cavity so that one or both electrodes extend at least partially into the cavity. Other embodiments include a second perspiration sensor, and measurements from the second perspiration sensor can be used in calculating the perspiration metric.”
The latest device-related imbroglio has seen the blood oxygen sensor banned in the US following Apple’s legal battle with health technology company Masimo.
