Apple Watch Series 9: how does the new Double Tap feature work? | Detective T.C.

At your event Wonderlust 2023, Apple presented its new line of smart watches. The Apple Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 arrive with several features in their system. One of them is “Double Tap”.

How does the resource work to deliver this type of possibility? What uses does it promise to the user of the Cupertino giant’s smartwatch? O TudoCelular Detective went following the information and separated the main details for you in this column.

What is Double Tap?

“Double Tap” consists of a feature that allows interaction with the smart watch system through two taps. They must be done with the thumb and index finger of the same hand whose wrist is holding the wearable.

The movement is similar to what had already been introduced in the company’s virtual reality headset, the Apple Vision Pro. When you double-tap with both fingers, the system recognizes it and carries out some command, depending on the screen you are on.

Among the tasks compatible with the functionality, it is possible to take a photo with the cell phone camera synchronized with the wearable, answer or cancel a call, stop a timer, postpone an alarm and stop playing music, in addition to opening the Smart Stack.

How does it work?

After all, how is it possible for a watch to identify two finger touches on the same side where the accessory is positioned without an integrated camera? What technology is applied here?

Apple uses a combination of sensors to perform identification, using Artificial Intelligence. Among them are the accelerometer and the gyroscope. These are responsible for looking for small changes in the user’s movement. However, the kinetic part alone is not enough to awaken the resource.

The neural engine present in the smartwatch also takes advantage of the blood oxygen sensor as another source of information, to detect if there has been any real-time change in blood flow.

Thus, it is possible to combine the two pieces of information into a single signature, to recognize that the movement came through the double touch of the fingertips. A method not very different from other already known features, such as counting steps or automatically detecting physical activities, such as running and swimming.

Advances in practice

If on the technical side, the operation fits into the work of sensors that we have previously known in conjunction with a neural engine, how would “Double Tap” work on the practical side?

One of the main and immediate benefits is keeping the other hand free. If you are walking your dog, or holding a shopping bag, or doing another type of occupation with your free hand, having the ability to perform watch commands with two finger taps will be extremely practical.

But how far can this feature go? While the Apple Vision Pro uses your hands to control the entire interface, applying “Double Tap” through a watch creates a kind of “virtual button” at your fingertips.

Would it be possible in the future to integrate the “Apple” ecosystem in order to use an Apple Watch as a kind of mouse for a Mac? Or control playback of a movie or song playing on Apple TV?

Old designs gave another way to use a smart watch accelerometer. Work from Carnegie Mellon University, for example, explored the sensor to identify the object the user was holding.

In other words, the possibilities are still open for a feature like this, which might be improved over time. However, its operation must be well implemented, so as not to fall into oblivion or be discontinued soon, as was the case with the Hand ID used in the LG G8s ThinQ, for example.

Non-immediate availability

Although the feature was announced prominently by Apple for its new smart watches, the availability of “Double Tap” will not be immediate at the launch of the wearable models.

The function will only reach the Cupertino giant’s recently launched smartwatches next October, through a software update.
