After being used to help a woman during a flight, the oximeter do Apple Watch was used to monitor the oxygenation levels of a 14 year old teenager with altitude sickness (or mountain sicknessa condition called hypobaropathy) in Peru. The problem is related to the effects of high altitude levels, where oxygen levels are lower.
The teenager and his father, Josephwere at an altitude of more than 4.200 metros, so the young man developed the condition. The father then used an Apple Watch to monitor his oxygen levels overnight until help arrived. What happened might have led to more serious symptoms or even death if it had not been monitored.
Joseph shared the story with Apple CEO, Tim Cook, by email. The executive responded to the teenager’s father, saying that the story “sounds like a terrifying situation”.

Since the end of last year, the Apple Watches’ oximeter has been the target of patent disputes by Masimo, a health equipment company — so much so that the process even led to a ban on imports/sales of the watches in the United States. Ultimately, the component was deactivated by Apple in units sold from 1/18 onwards.
In the case of units already sold and in use before this date in the USA or purchased in other countries, they still have the oximeter working. The story is yet another to show how the watch’s sensors and features can help users take better care of their health, monitor body signals and save lives.
