A 24-year-old Scottish woman is attributing to Apple Watch the merit of having saved his life after the clock warned of a potentially fatal condition. According to Daily Recordthe woman is named Rebecca McManus and was diagnosed by doctors with two pulmonary emboli.

It all started when Rebecca found it difficult to breathe after climbing two flights of stairs — something she attributed to her pregnancy and asthma. However, an alert on the Apple Watch quickly changed her perception.

While resting, she received a notification that her resting heart rate had increased to 154BPM. Worried, she rushed to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with pulmonary embolism, a condition in which the arteries in the lung are blocked.

Initially, Rebecca sought help at a hospital in Glasgow. However, doctors attributed her symptoms to the pregnancy, suggesting that the growing baby was putting pressure on her diaphragm.

Despite being sent home, her symptoms persisted, prompting her to see a familiar general practitioner. During that appointment, Rebecca’s heart rate rose rapidly from 80BPM to 140BPM just by getting up from a chair.

Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, the professional immediately sent her back to the hospital. Tests later revealed the presence of two life-threatening blood clots in her lungs.

It’s ridiculous that I was sent home after being told it was “just the pregnancy”. I could have died within a few months thinking my symptoms were just due to the pregnancy. One blood clot can be fatal, and I was walking around with two.

Rebecca, who is currently 22 weeks pregnant, was placed on blood thinners for treatment. Reflecting on the experience, she expressed her gratitude for the Apple Watch, stating that if it weren’t for the watch, “she wouldn’t have realized the danger she was in”. And she reinforced: “He saved my life.”

Finally, they encouraged her to get in touch to discuss any concerns about her care.
