Apple Watch: Executives talk third-party watch faces, widgets and more

After providing, last week, an interview to the CNETApple’s vice president of technology, Kevin Lynchtalked recently with the swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger regarding some other details of the Apple Watch and your operating system, the watchOS.

In addition to Lynch, the Apple Watch marketing director, Deidre Caldbeckwho initially commented on the fact that watchOS does not support third party dials — something already mentioned by other company executives.

According to her, Apple’s control over the available options means that users “don’t have to worry regarding whether the watch face will work when there’s a major watchOS update”.

In this sense, they argue that Apple would not be able to guarantee that third-party displays would continue to work following some change in the operating system – such as changes in the interface of the watchOS 10. Additionally, Lynch said Apple already offers “a lot of flexibility” in customizing watch faces and the ability to enhance them with third-party app complications.

They also explained how the widgets of the future clock system represent a “natural evolution” of the Abstracts (Glances)introduced in watchOS 1.0:

Users wanted quick access to information, and the widget system makes that data readily accessible, without the layered complexity of Summaries.

Lynch also spoke regarding the design decisions behind the Force Touch on the original Apple Watch and its subsequent removal. According to him, the larger screens of the newer models allowed them to “implement actions without the need for complicated hidden gestures”.

like the screen [do Apple Watch original] was too small, we wanted a way to add features you only need occasionally without taking up valuable screen real estate. So we came up with the idea that you might press harder to access additional functions. This solved our problem. But it created a new one: you didn’t see where to add more functions with it and you had to know exactly what you were doing. Therefore, we look for alternatives. And now that screens are significantly larger, we have many more ways to display information and additional features.

Interesting revelations, no?
