Apple Vision Pro will have Optical ID, biometrics using iris scanning

When drawing the Apple Vision Pro — and everything around it, like the brand new operating system visionOS —, a Apple faced not only the challenge of conceiving a completely new product in its ecosystem, but also of redesigning and adapting concepts already present in it, such as those involving the privacy of user.

One of the coolest novelties in this sense is the arrival of the Optic ID, the company’s new biometric authentication method — which, of course, already had Touch ID and Face ID in its portfolio. If the latter focuses on the user’s face, the new method uses the headset’s advanced sensors and cameras to perform the iris reading and identify it precisely.

This new system uses the uniqueness of your iris — which is different even in identical twins — to instantly unlock the Apple Vision Pro.

As with other methods, Optic ID data is securely stored using the Secure Enclave of the device — meaning they are used exclusively for authentication. The possible tasks are the same as we already know, such as making purchases in the App Store, using Apple Pay or autofilling passwords.

Not requiring the user to make any gestures or look at any specific point, Optic ID is very practical and works instantly. It is also more secure than Face ID, as Apple’s facial authentication mechanism is susceptible to deception involving twin brothers, for example.

Of course, Apple’s technology appears to be superior to that adopted in the past by manufacturers as well. like samsung. Present in the company’s top-of-the-line smartphones, the iris reading method has been discontinued following facing problems like the possibility of “fooling” him with a photo.

More privacy highlights

To protect the viewing direction, input provided by the user’s eye is isolated to a separate background process so that apps and websites cannot “see” where the Apple Vision Pro wearer is looking.

Only the user’s final selection — which is made in the blink of an eye — is shared with Apple and third-party apps. This selection is the same as when tapping or clicking on something using physical interface devices.

Camera data, in turn, is processed at the system level so that individual applications do not need access to the landscape around the user. There is also a visual indicator to indicate when they are being used to record 3D video.

Interesting, isn’t it? ????
