WWDC 2023 is a historic event for Apple, which introduced its first-ever $3,500 mixed reality headset. The Vision Pro wants to revolutionize productivity and entertainment in virtual and augmented reality. Apple has confirmed that the Vision Pro is slated for release in early 2024 in the US before arriving in other countries. The Cupertino company has not yet revealed the complete technical data sheet of the Vision Pro.
During a WWDC 2023 developer session, the presenter confirmed that the Vision Pro will have a 90Hz refresh rate most of the time. It is therefore not the 120 Hz that some hoped to have, but it is already better than the 60 Hz of the basic iPhones. The iPhone 13 Pro / Pro Max and the iPhone 14 Pro / Pro Max can go up to 120 Hz.
The Apple Vision Pro has a 90Hz refresh rate, but it’s the only one with 23 million pixels
During the session titled “Optimizing Application Power and Performance for Spatial Reality”, the presenter said that the screen refresh rate is ” typically 90 frames per second ».
You should know that a refresh rate of 90 Hz is considered the minimum recommended for virtual reality experiences. This is due to the perception of the brain. Indeed, a refresh rate of 90 Hz is perceived as real movement by the brain.
Moreover, this does not mean that the maximum refresh rate of the Vision Pro will be 90 Hz. The mixed reality headset will obviously be able to offer more frames per second. Watching videos at 24 FPS for example, the refresh rate of the reality headset will go up to 96 Hz.
However, you should also know that other virtual reality headsets offer higher refresh rates up to 144 Hz. The Vision Pro is however the only one to have 23 million pixels in its micro-OLED screens.
