Apple Vision Pro Developer Strap supports Thunderbolt

Among the accessories Apple Vision Prois the Developer Strap, which is aimed at developers and allows you to connect the headset to a Mac via a USB-C port, which must be placed in place of the side strap. The accessory, however, can currently only reach USB 2.0 speeds (that is, up to 480Mbps).

As the Developer Strap has 14 pins, even more than a Thunderbolt cable, the possibility of Apple releasing a higher speed in the future had already been considered. AND, as discovered by 9to5Macthis actually seems to be technically possible, even though Apple is blocking it through software.

When connecting the Vision Pro with the accessory, the macOS System Information area shows that the Developer Strap’s USB 2.0 speed limitation is not in the hardware. Apple just directs the connection using technology 10BASE-T via USB 2.0, this being just one of the possible connection types, although only the only one that currently works.

In this way, a software update may release these untapped capabilities of the device. When comparing hardware log data from the headset and the Developer Strap before and following the device is connected with a suitable Thunderbolt cable, for example, this possibility is quite clear.

When connecting with a Thunderbolt cable, the device is shown to have hardware capabilities to connect via USB 3.0, DisplayPort, and PCIe. With this, it would be possible to achieve much higher speeds than those currently available, such as with Thunderbolt cables in other devices, including Ethernet cables, monitors and external disks.

It is worth noting that the Developer Strap can only be purchased by developers registered with an American account and is not intended for the end consumer. In any case, it is interesting to see that there is a more advanced capacity than what is currently available, even if it is something aimed at application development.
