iPhone and Apple Watch owners have had to do an update in the last few days, but now they will have to pay attention to a new feature that allows the sharing of information between the brand’s devices through a simple touch.
The “NameDrop” function is active automatically on devices that have downloaded the IOS 17.1 and watchOS 10.1 updates.
“You can use NameDrop to quickly share contact information with a nearby iPhone or Apple Watch,” the company explained on its website. To do this, simply bring the top of the two devices a few centimeters apart.
Several American police forces reacted by issuing warnings.
“This feature […] might lead you to unknowingly share your contact information with others,” said Longwood police in Florida, reminding people that it is best to activate “NameDrop” only when you need it.
However, it should be noted that the “NameDrop” function requires minimal interaction and does not share contact information automatically. The user who wants to share their contact must tap on their details to share them.
To deactivate the functionality, you must go to the settings, then select “general” and “AirDrop” before unchecking the “Device bringing together” sharing mode.
“Remember to change these settings on your child’s phone to keep them safe as well,” Longwood police also suggested parents.
