Even following having already released the “of the year” versions of its operating systems, Apple may still be planning software news for 2023. More specifically, the application Apple TV may undergo some transformations — in line with the company’s strategy of simplifying video and content services.
According to the journalist Mark Gurmanyes Bloomberg, the new version of the app will be released as part of a tvOS 17 update, which might arrive in December this year. Existing since 2016, the app — native to iPhones, iPads, Macs and Apple TVs — aggregates content from streaming services, iTunes and Apple TV+.
The version of the app for tvOS and other TVs should have a new design, including a column on the left side to navigate between video categories. The interface, therefore, should be more similar to that of movie and series streaming service apps, in addition to being more simplified, making it easier to understand which content is included in Apple TV+ and which requires other subscriptions or separate purchases.
Furthermore, with the update, the iTunes Store for iPhone/iPad, and the movie and series sections should be removed from the app. On Apple TV, apps dedicated to purchasing films and series will also be discontinued, in order to concentrate such functions in the TV app itself, where they are already available, making the iTunes app a replacement.
The idea behind the change is to consolidate the Apple TV app as a streaming hub for audiovisual content. It already offers, for example, channel subscriptions, as well as sports programs, such as Major League Soccer, and should now absorb even more resources in this regard.
