Apple TV 4K vs PS5: How does performance compare?

The The latest Apple TV 4K was available to consumers for regarding a week, and we continue to learn more regarding the changes and improvements Apple made with this year’s release. The new Apple TV 4K is powered by the A15 Bionic chip and new depth test who Flatpanels HD It offers an interesting look at how it compares to gaming consoles like Playstation 4 and Playstation 5.

Apple TV 4K performance test

The A15 chip used by Apple TV 4K this year features a quad-core GPU, instead of the five-core GPU version used in the iPhone 13 Pro. It also has a quad-core processor instead of a five-core one, which once once more shows that this is essentially a “blocked” version of the A15 Bionic chip used in other devices.

In terms of performance compared to the previous generation Apple TV with the A12 chip inside, my tests Flatpanels HD It showed that this year’s Apple TV 4K is “almost 40% faster”. Apple advertises that it should be 50% faster, but that difference might simply be due to differences in testing methodology.

Another change this year is that the latest Apple TV 4K doesn’t have a fan inside, resulting in a smaller, lighter design. How does this affect performance, cooling, and throttling? The new Apple TV 4K is really unfortunate Less From the previous model:

In our CPU test, the A15 was regarding 40% faster than the A12 in the previous Apple TV — less than the 50% improvement Apple claims would use a different testing methodology. On the other hand, we were surprised to see the A15’s throttle is lower than the A12’s since it doesn’t have active cooling. A 20-minute CPU stress test shrank the A12 to 65% while the A15 dropped to just 84%, which means the new Apple TV 4K can retain most of the CPU’s performance during heavy gaming loads for extended periods.

In terms of comparisons to gaming consoles such as the PS5 and Xbox One:

The CPU in the A15 Bionic is much faster than previous generation game consoles such as the Xbox One and PlayStation 5. The CPU performance core in the A15 is also much faster than the PS5 CPU core (Single Core Performance) but the PS5 is way ahead in Multi-Performance Basic because it has 8 cores versus 5 cores in the Apple TV version of the A15.

In terms of GPU, Apple TV 4K (2022) on paper exceeds 1 TFlops of graphics performance, but it’s somewhat unclear since there’s no GPU info or benchmark apps available for tvOS. In terms of TFlops performance, it still can’t match last-gen gaming hardware like the Xbox One and only has half the amount of RAM (4GB vs. 8GB).

On the other hand, the Apple TV 4K (2022) has much faster RAM and is equipped with a very fast NVMe SSD compared to the old hard drive in last generation consoles. We’re starting to get to the point where Xbox One and PS4 games should be playable on Apple TV without too many compromises.

For years, Apple has tried to turn the Apple TV into a gaming device but without much success. These tests confirm that the problem is not performance but the lack of broader support from developers and game studios. These tests show that not much has changed in this department, but the performance of the available games is still impressive.
