The final version of iOS 18 will be released to the public next Monday, 1September 6th. The update will introduce several new features that you can check out directly from our dedicated page, but some users may not want to install it right away to avoid any bugs or compatibility issues with important apps. For this reason, Apple will allow you to stay on iOS 17, while continuing to receive security updates.

In addition to the RC (Release Candidate) version of iOS 18.0, Apple has also made available a new RC of iOS 17.7 for developers and public beta testers. This update doesn’t appear to introduce any new features, but it does include bug fixes and security patches for iOS 17.
Apple will likely release iOS 17.7 at the same time as iOS 18.0 next week. Users will see both updates in the Settings app on iPhone and iPad, and will be able to choose whether to stay on iOS 17 with the latest security patches or upgrade to iOS 18 with all the new features. It should be noted that this is not the first time that Apple has offered this option.
Last year, Apple continued to release security patches for iOS 16 after the launch of iOS 17. However, at one point, these updates were only made available to devices that were not compatible with iOS 17. Since iOS 18 will be compatible with all iPhones that support iOS 17, it is likely that Apple will stop releasing updates for iOS 17 in a few months.
Again, having the ability to choose which version of the operating system to stay on is helpful in avoiding bugs, especially for those who rely on apps that may not yet be fully compatible with iOS 18.
In addition to iOS 18, Apple will also release iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, tvOS 18, visionOS 2, and macOS Sequoia next week.
