Apple: “There will be no 27-inch Apple Silicon iMac”

There has never yet been a 27″ iMac equipped with an Apple Silicon chip and there won’t be, Apple says this very officially. Alongside the publication of the test of the new iMac 24″ M3, Apple wanted to clarify to several media including The Verge et TechCrunch that it does not intend to launch a 27″ model, successor to those we have known, equipped with an Apple Mx chip. It is an old hand at Apple who is bowing out since the first 27″ had been launched in October 2009. Apple retired it concurrently with the release of the Mac Studio and the Studio Display in March 2022.

This kind of detail on an upcoming machine (or lack thereof) is quite rare, but it shows that Apple is hoping that those still eyeing replacements for the Intel 27″ iMac and 27″ iMac Pro will upgrade to the action and will equip themselves with a current Apple Silicon Mac.

This is part of the answer: Apple urges those who are waiting for such a model to prefer a Mac Studio with a Studio Display or a Mac mini with any external 5K screen. Still according to Apple, the 24″ iMac, with its 4.5K screen, fits ideally between the two previous Intel models of the monoblock, the 21.5″ and the 27″. Still, the choice of processor is just as unique on the 24″. We had the M1 at its launch, we have the M3 today (with two M3 configurations with 8 or 10 GPU cores). On the Intel generations we might choose between Core i5 or i7 depending on needs and budget. No iMac 24″ M3 Pro on the menu, therefore.

No more mention of screen size for the iMac M3 (left). There is one and only one iMac.

The 24″ format is not unpleasant and can suffice when space is lacking, but a larger screen is always more appreciable on this type of all-in-one machine. Which leads to another hypothesis, which is that Apple certainly does not plan to put a 27″ panel in an iMac, but it is not closing the door to an even larger iMac, with an as yet undefined diagonal.

A month ago, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted a double iMac for 2025, one 24″ and the other 32″. Mark Gurman at Bloomberg had also spoken regarding this same large diagonal in testing. But for what investment on the customer side, if Apple wants to use the best screens at its disposal. We will remain cautious, this release from Apple is unusual enough to suggest that it wants to hammer the last nail into the coffin of the iMac XL formats.
