Apple: The iPhone is no longer vulnerable to attacks from a small box

Apple has refrained from communicating around a fix made last week with the deployment of the iOS 17.2 update for iPhone. In addition to the launch of the new Journal app, new options for the customizable Action button of the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, or even the possibility of capturing “spatial” 3D videos with these two smartphones, the new version of the operating system now also blocks attacks from the famous Flipper Zero multifunction accessory for hackers. This small open source device capable of interacting with other devices by emulating RFID devices, NFC chips, or even remote controls, might in fact also be used to crash iPhones. By installing malware called Xtreme on this plastic toy-like accessory, Flipper Zero was able to exploit a flaw in the Bluetooth connection of Apple smartphones. In practice, it sent a large number of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) requests to nearby iPhones, such as pairing fake AirPods, to the point of crashing the smartphone and forcing it to restart.

In order to protect yourself from these attacks, which do not aim to take data from the iPhone by taking its control remotely, but simply to annoy its owner, the only solution until now was to deactivate Bluetooth on the smartphone. According to tests carried out by the specialist sites ZDNet and 9to5Mac, this is no longer necessary, the system being protected once morest Flipper Zero. Some notifications continue to appear, but they no longer cause iPhone to crash, reports The Verge. The latter recommends updating your iPhone with the latest iOS 17.2 patches, if you haven’t already done so.
