News hardware Apple: The company’s trick to saving billions of dollars
A decision made in 2020 by Apple would have already saved it more than $6.5 billion. And it concerns its customers, since it is the absence of a charger in the boxes of its various devices.
Apple’s first argument to explain the removal of the mains charger and wired headphones from the boxes of its iPhones is above all ecological. The American company details, on its website, its desire to “reduce the carbon footprint” of its activity, which is to its credit, in a context where high-tech waste raises questions. But this decision does not only have ecological virtues : it also allows Apple to save a lot of money.
Billions of dollars saved since 2020
According to the Daily Mail, which relies on expert analysis, Apple would have reduced its carbon footprint by two million tons of CO2 per year in recent years, equivalent to the emission of 500,000 cars. But that’s not all: by taking the decision to eliminate the mains charger and headphones from the boxes of its iPhones, the firm would also have done savings of more than $6.5 billion.
This amount also takes into account savings made by reducing the packaging of its terminals, which not only are cheaper to produce, but also allow more boxes to be put on transport pallets. Up to 70% more devices might be stored on each pallet: shipping costs would thus have been reduced by almost 40%.
Finally, the absence of a charger in the iPhone box prompted Apple to slightly lower the price of the mains charger sold separately. But the study carried out by the firm CCS Insight underlines that even if the manufacturer has made an effort on this point, it still sells the accessory at a price much higher than its production cost. Apple would have earned more than 290 million through the sale of accessories since 2020.
Samsung in the footsteps of Apple
Apple intends to continue its momentum: by 2030, the Cupertino company hopes to offer fully carbon-neutral products. A choice that inspires other companies in the sector, such as Samsung, which sells all its new mobile devices without a charger. Again, the green argument is widely put forward, but it is probably not the only reason for this decision.
