Apple: the 15 “MacBook Air can make a mass switch in the company

Just as the switch from PowerPC to Intel allowed Apple to gain legitimacy with Windows customers, to a lesser extent the 15″ MacBook Air arrived to serve the same interests.

In interview near Inc.two Apple marketing managers, Laura Metz (for the Mac) and Thomas Tan (more specifically for the business market), reiterate the arguments for this laptop which fills a gap in the Apple range.

For a long time, it may have seemed surprising that the MacBook Air did not come in larger sizes than the 13″ (not to mention the 11″ that existed at the start). It was Intel’s fault, explains Laura Metz, without however naming the former partner of Apple. It has always been possible to make a 15″ MacBook Air but we understand that the machine would not have been light-light:

Looking back on previous designs, it just wouldn’t have worked. It didn’t sound “Air” to us. It’s only with the Apple Silicon platform that we’ve been able to bring together all the ingredients necessary to combine this larger screen with the battery life and performance that users expect from a MacBook Air.

Hence this dilemma for users who wanted a portable Mac with a larger screen and had no other solution than to go for Pro models, which were far too expensive for their budget. As we noted in our test of the new 15″, the offer is however abundant on the PC side in diagonals of 15 and 16″ and at lower prices than those of Apple.

For Apple, there are now sales to be made in the company, with a more affordable machine than the MacBook Pro and with customers who do not have exaggerated performance needs:

We knew there were users who wanted more screen comfort, but didn’t need the extra capabilities and performance of the 14″ or 16″ MacBook Pro. We also know that the PC laptop market 15″ is substantial — this is also true in the business sector where users are interested in this larger diagonal.

For once, it is a “pro” clientele that is not intended to go to “Pro” MacBooks. Users for whom the 15″ MacBook Air ticks the necessary boxes with a more digestible depreciation cost.

We are definitely seeing many more customers today than in the past making this complete change. [grâce à la plateforme Apple Silicon, ndlr]. Customers in retail sectors are adopting the MacBook Air for everyday use, so are manufacturing and healthcare. From what we see, there is a real and wider appeal from companies since Apple Silicon chips.

We highlighted it in our review of this migration from Intel to in-house chips, Apple has taken over the bar for the design and launch timing of its machines. It remains dependent on possible technical difficulties at home or at its main ally, TSMC, but it is a heavyweight intermediary that jumped with the abandonment of Intel. An agility that gives her a leeway that she has never known in the past.
