Apple has started development of a 20-inch foldable display, according to a recent report by The Elec (via Macrumors) out. The colleagues refer to unspecified industrial circles.

MacBook Pro with 20 inch foldable display?

It has been reported for a long time that Apple is interested in foldable displays. Anything else would simply surprise us. While a few manufacturers are already offering mobile devices with foldable displays (Samsung is certainly the first to be mentioned here), Apple has not yet publicly commented on the subject. Nevertheless, the engineers in Cupertino will have been working on the topic for a long time.

Among other things, Apple is said to have started the development of a 20-inch device with a foldable display. Specifically, it is said to be a 20.25-inch OLED display from an unspecified South Korean supplier. When folded, such a disaster would fit on a 15.3 inch screen. This would be significantly larger than the previous iPad Pro and smaller than the 16-inch MacBook Pro.

It’s called

Since the screen size when unfolded is around 20 inches, the project product should be in a form that comes close to a MacBook (laptop). Let’s say a 20-inch product is 20.25 inches tall, then it’s 15.3 inches tall when folded. Currently available Apple MacBook series screen sizes range from 13 to 16 inches, and iPad (tablet) series screen sizes range from 8.3 inches to 12.9 inches.

The report goes on to say that such a device will be launched in 2026 or 2027. The report also contains an interesting statement about the iPad mini. It is said that Apple wants to replace the iPad mini with a 10-inch foldable device. A foldable iPhone, on the other hand, is considered unlikely. According to the report, Apple will announce new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models with OLED displays in 2024.

All in all, it still sounds like a lot of future music. You don’t have to be a prophet to predict that Apple is looking into foldable displays. It remains to be seen when and in what form these will be used on a mass scale.
