Apple has removed an app called Kimi from its App Store, which is a platform that allows users to watch pirated movies on their smartphones.
According to a report by The Verge, Apple has removed the app from the App Store on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, following it was described as “misleading.” The report notes that the app has been available on the App Store since approximately September 2023.
According to the report, Kimi looked suspicious and was not a vision testing app, and the app also did not have a proper description or screenshots.
However, Kimi was placed eighth on the App Store’s list of popular free entertainment apps, and 46th overall for free apps, the report added.
When the app is opened, movies and TV shows are displayed for users to watch. The report noted that this app also did not have any splash screen or trick to open it and was not hidden under any layer of legality.
The app is similar to the older Popcorn Time app which has been available on the Apple App Store for years. This app also allows users to stream movies from torrents. The report did not confirm if Kimi is also using torrents to host all this content which would also be expensive.
The report also notes that the “Search” tab in the app has easy filtering options, and even includes a “Rating” tab that displays users’ content such as what people are watching most or what’s new.
This app also allows users to download movies, however, not all content has good viewing quality. It also did not share information such as film crew details or trivia. The report claims that the app is “designed to get you to the movies you want as quickly as possible, regardless of their legitimacy.”
Apple did not reveal how this application bypassed the application review team in the company’s App Store.
For years, the iPhone maker has insisted that a locked App Store is necessary to keep iOS users safe.
The company also argued once morest regulations that would require Apple to allow sideloading apps or alternative app stores.
Recently, a phishing app was also spotted on the App Store that was pretending to be LastPass.
