Apple maintains a software updates policy that ensures the security of older devices that are still in use. This Tuesday (18), big tech released versions Release Candidate (RC) of iOS 15.7.8, iPadOS 15.7.8, macOS Big Sur 11.7.9 and macOS Monterey 12.6.8 for eligible iPhone, iPad and Mac models.
The manufacturer has not yet provided release notes that detail the changes made by the new software versions, but it is common for these compilations to bring important corrections to the security of devices that have stopped receiving operating system updates, such as the iPhone 6S.
Release Candidates are test versions that have received various refinements and, if there is positive feedback from testers, will be made available to all users. The release of these builds indicates that it won’t be long until their stable version arrives in the form of an update.

iPadOS 15.7.8 is expected to become available for select iPad models that do not support iPadOS 16, including the 2nd generation iPad Air and 4th generation iPad mini, released in 2014 and 2015 respectively. macOS 11.7.9 and 12.6.8 are expected to be available for older Mac models, such as devices released in 2013 and 2014.
The new builds carry the following build numbers:
iOS 15.7.8 and iPadOS 15.7.8: 19H364
macOS Big Sur 11.7.9: 20G1426
macOS Monterey 12.6.8: 21G725
Release Candidates for iOS 15.7.8, iPadOS 15.7.8, macOS Big Sur 11.7.9 and macOS Monterey 12.6.8 can be downloaded and installed by users who are registered for Apple’s beta software program.
It is always recommended to back up important data that is stored on devices that will receive a beta version of software, since there is a chance of occurrence of critical failures that may lead to the need to reset the device to its factory settings.
