A Apple released, this week, a special short film — as part of the campaign “Shot on iPhone” (“Shot with iPhone”) – for the Chinese new year.

Entitled “Little Garlic” (“Little Garlic”), the 15-minute video, produced in partnership with TBWA and the Shanghai Media Arts Laboratory, was recorded entirely with a iPhone 15 Pro Max and is directed by Marc Webb (“Snow White”), with a script by Pan Yi Ran (“The Daughter Who’s Come Back”).

With dialogue in Chinese, the film tells the story of a little girl (Cheng Zi Xia) who has insecurities regarding her appearance, as her nose is compared to a clove of garlic by classmates at school. After talking to her patient grandfather (Fan Wei) regarding the issue, she goes into a closet and — following saying that she would like to be “anyone” but herself — comes out looking different, discovering the superpower of changing her look and body to what she idealized.

Several of the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s camera features were used in recording the short, such as 5x optical zoom, and modes Action and Cinema. In a behind-the-scenes video (below), Webb said that the film’s shots were designed to make it more interesting and to show how far the new top-of-the-line model’s camera can go. Transitions in scenes also require a certain sensor speed, showing the device’s capabilities.
