Every year, the Apple publishes a kind of safety report concerning the App Store. Showing an increase in threats (and perhaps combat capability) over the previous year, the company has barred more than $2 billion in potentially fraudulent transactions in the app store em 2022 — versus $1.5 billion in 2021.
According to statement released by the company, 1.7 million of apps were rejected last year for not complying with app store standards. The number is slightly higher than what was seen in 2021, although it does not represent as substantial an increase as the value of suspicious transactions.
Other interesting data were also released. Between them, 428 mil developer accounts were banned for engaging in potentially fraudulent activity in 2022 (up from 802K in 2021), while 282 mil customer accounts suffer the same fate for a similar reason. About 105 million people were also blocked from creating developer accounts due to suspected fraudulent activity.
Of the 1.7 million rejected apps, 400 mil rejections occurred due to privacy concerns; 153 mil because they are spam or copies; It is 29 mil because of hidden features. According to Apple, the Xcode already checks for malware in the app’s programming phase, which helps in the review process.
The total number of 6.1 million of last year’s app submissions were reviewed at a rate of regarding 100 mil per week, with around 90% receiving a response in less than 24 hours. Regarding app ratings and ratings, they have been removed 147 million (of the total of 1 billion) by scam or bots.
Finally, in terms of financial matters, 3.9 million of credit cards were prevented from being used in fraudulent transactions, as well as being banned 714 mil accounts involved in these cases. In this way, a loss of $2.09 billion in fraud by 2022.
Some of this data will certainly be used by Apple to reinforce the importance that apps can only be installed through the App Store and its security system. It is worth remembering that the European Union’s Digital Markets Law will come into force this year and the legal text includes permission for the so-called sideloadingwhich might be one of the novelties of iOS 17 in Europe.
Anyway, remarkable numbers, no?
