Apple prematurely withdraws new security updates

Deployed this Monday evening on iPhone and Mac, urgent security updates are already withdrawn from circulation by Apple because they are problematic in more ways than one.

Clearly, Apple has had a hard time with the new updates deployed on iOS, macOS or iPadOS lately. In a few months, the new operating systems have encountered some bugs with Siri, Contacts or Weather. This time, Apple wanted to take the lead in rolling back its latest urgent security updates.

It is iOS and iPadOS 16.5.1 (a) as well as macOS 13.4.1 (a) which are targeted. Initially, Apple released updates at the end of June to fix major security flaws in WebKit and the Kernel. The two flaws fixed by these updates could then be exploited by hackers by executing arbitrary code on your iPhone, iPad or Mac.

This Monday evening, Apple rolled out urgent security updates for the different versions of its OS. As a reminder, this new device has only recently existed, which appeared in May. Instead of performing a complete system update, Apple can, if it wishes, deploy a minor update on the terminals in order to quickly resolve one or another security problem.

The concern is that some of its security updates cause more problems than they solve. The builds released on Monday were supposed to fix a security issue. However, it disappeared as quickly as it appeared, after the Apple realized that it was causing problems on Safari with certain services, including WhatsApp, Instagram, Zoom or Facebook, now no longer supported by Safari.

How to backtrack?

The targeted version of the OS is thus accompanied by a small (a). If you had previously enabled the automatic installation of urgent security updates, you should find that your device is running iOS 16.5.1 (a), iPadOS 16.5.1 (a) or macOS 13.4.1 (a) .

To activate them, you must go to the menu General settings, tabs Software update et Automatic updates. Then activate the option Security updates and system files. This way, iOS or macOS will automatically install these updates when the device is plugged in, locked, and connected to WiFi.

To remove an urgent security update recently installed on your device, the process is quite easy. Once in the settings, go to the tab Generalthen in the menu Informationswhere you will find Version d’iOS. It is in this window that you can delete the urgent update.
