A Apple today updated the guidelines for App Store to respond to a request from the European Commission, now allowing music services (such as Spotify) in the European Union include links or purchase buttons leading outside the app.

With the change, the developers of these applications will be able to offer purchasing alternatives, as well as request users’ emails to send direct purchasing options.

The link can inform users about where and how to purchase in-app purchase items, as well as the price of those items. Rights are limited to use only in the iOS App Store or iPadOS in specific stores. In all other stores, music streaming apps and their metadata may not include buttons, external links, or other calls to action that direct customers to purchasing mechanisms other than in-app purchasing.

This decision comes after Maçã was fined €1.8 billion for anti-competitive practices against rival services. The company has already said it intends to appeal and accuses Spotify of manipulating the European Commission to change App Store rules.

Emulators

In addition to this change, Apple has also revised its guidelines for allow retro console emulators. This includes HTML5 mini apps and games, game streaming, chatbotsemulators and plugins.

Applications may offer certain software that is not embedded in the binary, specifically HTML5 mini applications and mini games, streaming games, chatbots and plugins. Additionally, retro game console emulator apps may offer to download games. You are responsible for all software offered on your application, including ensuring that such software complies with these Guidelines and all applicable laws.

This update, however, is of a global and indicates a more open policy for applications and games on the App Store — reflecting a certain adaptation to the regulatory pressures that the company has suffered in recent years.
