A Apple extrajudicially notified Colombian engineer Wilmer Becerra, well known on social media for producing videos in which he repairs iPhones, iPads and iMacs. Maçã asked the professional to stop displaying the company logo in their content.

Wilmer Becerra has been producing videos with Apple products since 2018, but it was only in July 2023 that Maçã notified him for the productions, following the Colombian’s content began to be successful on TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.

When Apple notified the engineer, the professional already accumulated more than 12 million followers across TikTok (5.3 million), Facebook (6.5 million) and Instagram (251 thousand) and a technical assistance network present in nine Latin American countries.

In an interview with Folha, Becerra said that his defense responded to Apple on August 1 and claimed the right to repair, which is a guarantee provided in some countries that associates the right to property, free competition and preservation of the environment.

Given this association, the defense highlighted that the repair of durable goods, such as cars, computers and cell phones, can be done without any implications once morest the person responsible for the repair. When contacted, Apple said it would not comment on the matter.

On social media, the Colombian engineer said that extending the useful life of devices with repairs is a more energy-efficient measure than Apple’s recycling system, which buys customers’ old devices to produce new parts.

Becerra owns a technical assistance network and even set up a service producing personalized covers for iPhones to pay for his lawyers. The engineer also stated that he was invited by Apple to have authorized technical assistance.

However, the Colombian said he does not intend to accept the proposal, as one of Apple’s guidelines for authorized partners is not to repair defective parts but to replace them, which limits the service and goes once morest Wilmer Becerra’s principle.

In Brazil, the legislation does not mention the right to repair and there is no judicial precedent. Becerra said he sources his parts to repair iPhones in authorized stores in the United States, where companies have to offer manuals and spare parts for the devices.

Currently, Wiltech, Becerra’s company, is present in countries such as Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru and Panama. In Brazil, according to the engineer himself, language barriers still prevent investment.
