With regard to Mac devices, the user must open the Photos application, then choose My Photo Stream, and from there all the desired images are selected to be stored, and Drag & Drop drags them all to the Library storage folder.
And Apple stressed the need to run the iCloud Photo service on iPhones running iOS 8.3 or later, iPad tablets running iPadOS 8.3 or later, as well as Mac computers running macOS X Yosemite or later.
