The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (Securities and Exchange Commissionor SEC) rejected a request from Apple and other companies to cancel a proposal that deals with increasing disclosures surrounding the use of artificial intelligence (IA).
According to a subject of Archyde.comthe proposal came from the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIOits acronym in English), which called for the publication of “transparency reports” that show how companies “have adopted any ethical guidelines to protect workers, customers and the public from harm related to the use of AI”.
The AFL-CIO’s concern is not recent: in October, the group stated in a publication that the Big Techs are “rushing to adopt AI technology” and that, in the entertainment industry, this technology can be used to “create literary material and replace human performances”.
In addition to Apple, Disney also sought to exclude the proposal through a request to the SEC requesting approval from the regulatory body to prevent this recommendation from being voted on by its shareholders. The request was also filed by companies such as Comcast, Netflix e Warner Bros.
This week, the SEC published its opinion, stating that it was “unable to agree” with the companies’ arguments that the use of AI was related to “ordinary commercial operations”, which means that the proposals must indeed be presented to investors .
Apple has not yet responded to requests for comment. The date for this year’s company annual shareholder conference has not yet been announced, but it is known that it usually takes place in March.
