Apple makes life a whole lot easier for electric car drivers with iOS 17

Apple has just lifted the veil on the new version of its operating system, iOS 17. The Apple firm has not forgotten the owners of electric cars and announces the arrival of charging stations directly on the home application Apple Maps.

If the electric car is starting to become more popular, some are still hampered by the autonomy deemed insufficient as well as recharging. However, filling your battery has never been so easy, while the number of terminals is increasing and these are easier to find. This is made possible by the increasingly widespread route planners.

A new feature

Some manufacturers do not offer this built-in feature, such as the Jeep Avenger. In most cases, you have to use the built-in navigation, which is not always very efficient. But this is gradually changing, thanks in particular to the progress made by Apple.

The firm founded by Steve Jobs has just announced a host of new features for WWDC 2023, including the arrival of Apple Vision Pro and the M2 Ultra chip. But what interests us is above all the latest update to iOS 17. This brings many new features, including one that should particularly appeal to owners of electric cars.

Indeed, this new version of the operating system of the iPhone is notably changing in depth the application Apple Plans (Apple Maps in English). Besides the possibility of download offline maps and enjoy navigation even without a network, the application offers new features dedicated to the automobile. It is now possible to access ireal-time charging station informationas announced by the company in a communiqué.

In concrete terms, electric car drivers can consult the occupancy rate of the stations live, in order to know if it is relevant or not to stop there. A solution that allows you to be better organized, especially during long journeys. Especially since the number of terminals is on the rise all over Europe, making the need for great autonomy unjustified.

How it works ?

As the specialized site explains 9to5Macjust select charging networks adapted to your vehicle from a list. This is not yet completely exhaustive, but includes Tesla Superchargers as well as Chargepoint and Electrify America in the United States. There is no doubt that other operators will be added later.

The system also takes into account the model of your car, in order to only offer you terminals equipped with a compatible connector. For the moment, not all vehicles are yet eligible for this feature, although it is currently in beta version.

Two cars have been fitted with the EV routing in Apple Maps, directly via the vehicle’s infotainment screen. These are the Ford Mustang Mach-e and more recently the Porsche Taycan. This integration goes further, since it is a route planner directly integrated into Apple CarPlay as we explained previously.

This makes it possible to centralize everything and no longer have to use the car’s navigation. Owners of Android smartphones must have a vehicle equipped with Android Automotive to benefit from an integrated route planner. This is for example the case of the Volvo C40 and XC40 Recharge or also the Renault Mégane E-Tech, which do not even require you to plug in your phone, unlike Apple.
