Still own an iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, or iPhone X? It might then be interesting to turn to a more recent model. Apple no longer intends to correct the security flaws on these models by the fall.

The countdown begins. In a little over a month, Apple will unveil the new iPhones that will fill the upcoming range for the end of the year and most of 2024. The presentation of the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max is expected for Wednesday, September 13. The opportunity to turn to its new models therefore, but also to the oldest, on which we tend to draw a line once the new marketed.

And that’s what Apple is preparing to do within a month. With iOS 17, Apple intends to introduce powerful new features presented on June 5 at WWDC. The new iPhones will adapt to it without difficulty, which will not be the case for certain older models, including the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, but also the iconic iPhone X, celebrating ten years of the headed smartphone.

Models under A11 Bionic too old

All three released in 2017, these models feature the Apple A11 Bionic SoC. The future iPhone 15 Pro will run on an A17 Bionic processor, six generations therefore separating them. With the new update, new features like NameDrop, StandBy or Live Voicemail require enough processing power so that the phone does not slow down and provides an experience that Apple would describe as good enough for the user.

No question for Apple that these phones have bad press since they are not able to run this or that feature correctly. The choice to ignore certain older models was therefore taken.

Despite everything, Apple will have offered 6 years of software support for these iPhones, which is still well above the Android update average.

If the iPhone 8, the iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X remain current, of course, and will remain so for a little longer, we must not overlook the fact that they will no longer be able to accommodate security updates. They will thus be able to be more sensitive to the various security flaws that Apple will no longer correct as a priority, or at least, sporadically.
