Apple invites well-known VR experts to WWDC 2023

The time has come on June 5th: Apple’s keynote speech for WWDC 2023 begins at 7 p.m. German time – and with it, most likely, the presentation of Apple’s first mixed reality headset. The rumor mill has been believing for months that such a product – presumably called Reality Pro – will appear. Now there’s another clue that has to do with Apple’s invitation strategy for the event. The group has asked a number of well-known virtual reality experts to Cupertino, as the Apple blog 9to5Mac reports.

This year’s WWDC keynote will be as usual: there will be a video. However, this can be viewed on site upon invitation, so that you can then possibly examine the new hardware that is being presented. In addition to developers, who receive access by lottery, analysts and press representatives will also be on site.

And this year, these include people who are rarely seen at Apple events. According to 9to5Mac, among other things Ian Hamilton, Editor at UploadVR, who describes himself as a VR journalist designated. Norman Chan, who regularly tests augmented reality and virtual reality products, will also be there. On Twitter, a user replied to the post of his invitation with the words: “Norm invited, headset confirmed.”

All of this is reminiscent of Apple’s spring event in 2019, when the group invited numerous people from Hollywood (including well-known stars) to present its streaming service Apple TV+. In 2014, when the first Apple Watch was presented in the fall, various fashion journalists, who you don’t usually meet at events like this, came to the keynote. The solution to the riddle: Apple tried at the beginning to place the computer watch (also) as an expensive fashion product.

Apple typically invites a number of well-known tech journalists to its events, along with major mainstream publications. The pool of invitees shows that this WWDC will be a special one: It is said to have been enlarged – and not just by VR and AR experts. Apple wants to give the Reality Pro as much attention as possible. The headset is said to be high quality, but also comes with a hefty price tag — reportedly $3,000 or more. Internally, the project should also not be uncontroversial. As usual, Mac & i will report with a live ticker.
