The Italian antitrust agency (AGCM) has confirmed the opening of an investigation once morest Apple for alleged abuse of dominant position in the applications market.
According to preliminary data, the Cupertino giant penalized application developers by imposing “a more restrictive privacy policy” than the one that applies to itself.
The measure began to apply in April 2021 and may have harmed app producers in Italy and other European Union countries. The agency also points out that these developers are always at a disadvantage “in terms of the quality of the data made available by Apple.
That is, the company is also accused of not sharing relevant information and keeping it to itself.
Commenting on the matter, an AGCM spokesperson pointed out that the case has been under investigation for some time.
Apple’s alleged discriminatory conduct might lead to a drop in revenue for third-party developers, to the benefit of Apple’s own business division.
If convicted, Apple may be required to pay a fine of up to 10% of its annual turnover, but so far the company has not commented on the matter.
It should be remembered that the company has also been sued in the UK for allegedly “hiding” defective batteries in the iPhone line.
