In a press conference granted this week, the Minister of Commerce and Industry of India, Piyush Goyal, revealed that the Indian government has been talking with Apple regarding expanding the global production of the iPhone in the country.
According to the minister, currently Apple produces regarding 5% to 7% of the global iPhone demand in India, but the company is willing to increase that number to 25% until the year 2025.
The move is another success story for India’s economy,” said Goyal.
Analysts at JP Morgan bank claim that this 25% production in India can be achieved easily, since the company has already started to assemble more current top-of-the-line smartphones in the country.
The year 2022 marked the start of production of the iPhone 14 with little distance to the Chinese model. Before, Apple took months to produce its latest top of the line in India, but the trend is that production will soon begin simultaneously in China and India.
Expanding production on Indian soil also reduces Apple’s exposure to the Chinese government and the problems the country has been facing, such as the Covid outbreaks and worker protests.
However, as much as it may become a major producer of iPhones, India will remain a difficult market for Apple, as the company has only a 5% share of the disputed smartphone segment. That is, Indians must produce iPhones that they will never be able to buy.
