With the release of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 (in addition to other systems) to all users today, the first wave of Apple Intelligence can now be enjoyed around the world — although only in English.
However, Apple reiterated in a statement released today that the technology will support more languages next year — including Portuguese (still without detailing whether Brazil and/or Portugal).
Apple Intelligence is quickly adding support for more languages. In December, Apple Intelligence will be available for localized English in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom, and in April, a software update will provide expanded language support, with more coming throughout the year. Chinese, English (India), English (Singapore), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Vietnamese and other languages will be supported.
The above excerpt from the statement is a little dubious and may confuse many people. Although it says that in April 2025 a new software update will expand support to more languages, this does not necessarily mean that Portuguese will be included in this update. In other words, some of the languages listed will arrive in April; others, until the end of next year.
In the Irish version of the same statementApple also confirms that its AI capabilities will begin rolling out to iPhone and iPad users in European Union in April next year.
Mac users in the EU will be able to access Apple Intelligence in US English with macOS Sequoia 15.1. In April, Apple Intelligence features will begin rolling out to iPhone and iPad users in the EU. This will include many of Apple Intelligence’s core features, including Writing ToolsGenmoji, a redesigned Siri with richer language understanding, ChatGPT integration, and more.
Upcoming Features
In the same statement, the company also detailed the next additions to its AI, with iOS/iPadOS 18.2 and macOS 15.2 — testing of which has already begun — and other subsequent updates.
Already in Decemberthe following features will be available:
- Emoji will be taken to a whole new level with the ability to create a Genmoji simply by entering a description, which can also be personalized using a photo of a friend or family member.
- O Image Playground will allow users to create fun images in moments.
- A Image Wand It will make notes more visually engaging by turning sketches into images. When a user circles an empty space, an image will be created using the context of the surrounding area.
- As Writing Tools will offer users the ability to describe a specific change they want to apply to their text.
- Users will have the option to access ChatGPT within Writing Tools and Siri, allowing them to benefit from its image and document understanding capabilities without having to switch between tools.
- A new experience Visual Intelligence will be based on Apple Intelligence and will help users learn about objects and places instantly, thanks to Camera Control on iPhones 16 — which will also work with third-party tools, like when users want to Google where they can buy an item or if benefit from ChatGPT’s problem-solving abilities.
In later updates, other features will be released, such as Priority Notifications and improved Siri capabilities, which can identify a user’s personal context to provide personalized information. The assistant will also gain screen recognition, as well as be able to perform hundreds of new actions within and between Apple and third-party applications.
