Apple holds 90% of the market for computers with ARM chips

When the first MacBook with Apple Silicon was released, in 2020, it was clear that there would be a big impact on the computer market with the new processor (M1), which used the ARM architecture. And that actually happened, as shown by a survey by Counterpoint Research.

According to a consultancy survey published today, the Apple seas 90% of the computer market with ARM chips in 2022, which represented, last year, 14% of the total market. A Intel took the lead, with 70%followed by AMDcom 17,6%.

A projection included in the research predicts that, by 2027, ARM machines will correspond to 25% of the total market. The consultancy pointed out that issues such as greater native compatibility with applications must be resolved in order to gain greater market share.

Several factors were pointed out as advantages of the ARM architecture in relation to x86. Counterpoint recalled, for example, that x86 chips are generally made to serve less specific purposes. The ARM, on the other hand, allow for greater customization, which makes it possible to carry out advanced tasks, thanks to higher processing power numbers and a larger amount of memory.

Also noteworthy are the greater energy and thermal efficiency of ARM processors — aspects that draw a lot of attention in MacBooks with Apple Silicon. Another important advantage is the more advanced artificial intelligence capabilities than those of x86 chips, such as Apple’s Neural Engine, in order to achieve better results in activities such as machine learning and image recognition.

Counterpoint also recalled how ARM chips have enabled the construction of ever smaller and lighter machines. There are, for example, computers that work in structures similar to pendrives, as well as virtual reality glasses, which can benefit from processors with the aforementioned architecture.
