We have commented on several rumors regarding the supposed value of the mixed reality headset (enhanced/virtual) from Apple — including that it will cost $3,000 or even $5,000 when it goes on sale. However, how much should the device cost Apple?
Data from Minsheng Electronics, identified by XR Daily Newsprovide a supposedly detailed analysis of the approximate cost of each headset component — which, added up, would be up to US$1,4 mil (excluding transport and logistics), as detailed below.

Another list, this one from Wellsenn XR and posted by user Brad Lynch on Twittersuggests that the headset will have a slightly higher total cost, of approximately up to US$1,5 mil. In addition, information published not WeChat also suggest that mass production will start in the third quarter and that the device might be called “Apple Reality Pro”.
There are also data that among 400 to 500 mil headset units will be manufactured in the second half of this year. Following these estimates, Apple might earn $1.5 billion with the launch of the device, so it will still not be a commercial success compared to the company’s other products.
Precisely the low number of units can explain the high value of the headset’s bill of materials – which means that Apple might reduce the cost of components by placing even more orders.
It is worth remembering that the announcement of the headset is expected for WWDC23, so we are not far from knowing some (perhaps not all) details of the device.
