In recent weeks, many users have reported a particular problem with their iPhone, complaining that the device was turning off for a few hours overnight while it was charging. On Reddit and in specialized forums (like MacRumors), there are hundreds of reports of similar behavior: iPhones restarting overnight while charging, or turning off completely then turning back on a few hours later. In some cases, this prevented the iPhone alarm from going off in the morning as users were unhappy regarding delays at work. However, many other people didn’t even notice the problem until they checked their battery charts. In fact, there are two signs to realize that the iPhone has turned off overnight:
– iPhone asks to enter unlock code in the morning
– Graphs showing battery performance show “gaps” overnight, indicating the device has been turned off
Apple has not publicly commented on the news, which was reported by several specialized publications, but it seems that the company is aware of the problem: a Reddit user who had reported the bug to Apple received a response from support, which said it has identified a potential fix, which will be released with a future software update. It is also for this reason that many hoped that the bug would be resolved with iOS 17.1, the new version of the operating system which should be released next week. However, several publications, including MacRumors, report that iOS 17.1 does not appear to have resolved the issue, as some users who installed the beta update continue to report nightly shutdowns. Unfortunately, at the moment there are no official communications from Apple, nor any news on when the problem will be resolved: we can only hope for future software updates.
