After many years, Apple’s virtual/augmented reality headset has finally been revealed to the world. Called Vision Proaccording to Apple, it promises to revolutionize not only the world of entertainment and work, but also people’s daily lives.
Controlled only by gestures and vision, the headset displays a translucent interface right in front of the user that reacts to ambient light and casts realistic shadows. In addition to bringing elements from the virtual world into the real world, the headset is also capable of “teleporting” the user to a series of extremely impressive scenarios.
Thanks to the resource EyeSight, your eyes are still visible even when you have the headset on. When someone approaches you, the headset dims the content and shows the person clearly, keeping you aware of what’s going on around you.
The headset has a piece of glass that works as a kind of lens for the EyeSight and for the various sensors that equip the device. Its frame itself is made from a custom aluminum alloy and features a button and a Digital Crown on top.
It is possible to use the Vision Pro all day with it plugged in or with an external battery with an autonomy of two hours. The choice for this external battery, of course, was precisely to make the set lighter and therefore more comfortable.
Instead of Touch ID or Face ID, Vision Pro uses Optic ID, which scans the user’s retina to verify the user’s identity. All data captured by this technology is, of course, completely private and stored locally.
You can type using dictation or the virtual keyboard of visionOS, the operating system of Vision Pro. It is also compatible with accessories like Magical Keyboard and Magical Trackpad, however, as well as video game controllers.
You can position apps in almost any way, such as next to each other or on top of each other. You can still project a kind of second screen for the Mac and even use Vision Pro apps side by side with macOS apps.
Something really cool is the possibility of viewing 3D models sent in apps like Messages, for example, as well as making FaceTime calls that take over the entire environment, with the audio of each participant following exactly the direction in which their image is.
To make all this possible, the headset uses two very high resolution micro-LED screens with 23 million pixels each – more than a conventional 4K TV, according to Apple. There are also two speakers with Spatial Audio that use a technology of ray tracing to generate a personalized audio experience.
The Vision Pro also serves as a 3D camera, allowing users to record videos and stills at a depth never before possible on an iPhone or iPad. It also has sensors capable of scanning the user’s face and creating a super realistic 3D avatar of the user, which can be used on FaceTime, for example.
Powered by the M2 chip, the Vision Pro also has a new processor called the R1, which takes care of all the sensors and cameras in the headset. He is also responsible for processing all images at a speed of just 12 milliseconds, which helps to avoid nausea.
The headset also allows you to transform your home into a real movie theater and create gigantic screens to watch series and movies — which also applies to Apple Arcade, it is worth noting. The system itself tries to dim the environment around it so that the experience becomes even more immersive.
To consolidate this potential, Apple also announced a partnership with Walt Disney, which promised to bring several of its experiences to the Vision Pro. In addition to Apple TV+, Disney+ is another service that will be available on the headset at launch.
According to Apple, the Vision Pro will be released in early 2024 for a hefty $3,500. There is still no information regarding its availability.
