The US Patent and Trademark Office has granted Apple a new patent. According to the documentation, the Cupertino company has studied the launch of an iPhone with roll-up display.

This market trend is not new and many display manufacturers have been studying ways to make smartphones even more compact. Samsung, LG, Motorola and even Xiaomi are examples of companies that have already registered patents for rollable cell phones.

In the case of Apple, the sketch designed by the company’s engineers is relatively simple: this rollable OLED panel can be expanded or compressed easily by the user, and inside the smartphone we will have a display storage roll.

Apple also says in the documentation that the OLED panel will be coated with a transparent protective layer, which can be plastic or ultra-thin flexible glass.

The surface that will face outward needs to resist scratches and other “accidents” caused by users.

Furthermore, to prevent this panel from becoming full of irregularities over time, the company’s engineers plan a mechanism that keeps the screen receiving compression tension.

It should be noted that Apple’s patent application does not mean that the company is actually planning to launch a rollable iPhone. Generally, the company usually saves these ideas to avoid problems in the future.

That is, something very different from LG, which is already launching TVs with a roll-up panel. Motorola is also a positive example, as the company presented a cell phone prototype that can expand its screen from 5 to 6.5 inches using this same concept.
