A Apple filed an application for withdrawal of proceedings once morest Gerard Williams IIIformer company executive and co-founder of chip startup BRIDEjust over three years following the start of the imbroglio.
According to a new report by the Bloomberg, Apple filed a request in the state court in San Jose (California) to close the process, although there is no explanation for this. Apple was asked regarding the decision, but has yet to provide any clarification.
In 2019, it is worth remembering, Apple sued Williams, who headed the development of iPhone chips (from the A7 to the A12X), for breach of contract – so that he was prohibited, at the time of the creation of NUVIA, from “planning or participating from any business activity competitive with or directly related to Apple’s business or products.”
Just over a month following the start of the process, Apple won a victory over Williams following the Justice determined that the defendant might not have established the creation of a competitive business before the termination of the contract”, even more if he was using “ employer’s time and resources.
Other developments in the lawsuit also made news, including Williams’ allegation that Apple tried to stop his company from hiring engineers while simultaneously recruiting NUVIA employees. Additionally, in January 2021, NUVIA was acquired by Qualcomm for $1.4 billion.
Given how much Apple has investigated (and invested in) the case thus far, it’s a bit bizarre that the company would have asked for the lawsuit to be dismissed “out of the blue”. However, it is possible that an agreement between the parties has been made (outside the process).
We’ll see if any new details come to light.
