We’ve seen Tap to Pay on iPhone transform the checkout experience for so many different types of businesses, and we’re excited to now support merchants across the UK by providing an easy, secure and private way to accept contactless payments using the power, the security and convenience of iPhone, without the need for additional hardware. Small and medium-sized businesses have long played a vital role in the UK economy and, alongside payment platforms, app developers and payment networks, we are making it easier than ever for UK businesses to accept payments without contact and continue to grow your business.

Already available in the United States, Taiwan and Australia, Tap to Pay uses NFC technology to authenticate payments which are in turn encrypted and processed using so-called Secure Element. In other words, as with Apple Pay, the Cupertino giant does not know what is being purchased or who is carrying out the transaction.

Also according to Apple, to take advantage of Tap to Pay, you need to have an iPhone XS or higher running “the latest version of iOS” — that is, iOS 16.5.1. The feature will also become available in UK Apple Stores over the next few weeks.
