Apple in 2022 blocked more than 1.7 million apps in the App Store due to violations of its privacy, security and content policy. The company lost more than $2 billion in revenue due to filtering out potentially fraudulent apps. According to the company, its App Store app review team reviews an average of more than 100,000 app submissions weekly.
1.7 million apps blocked by Apple
According to Applethe company has striven to prevent fraud from occurring in the App Store and to that end has closed 428,000 developer accounts due to fraudulent activity, in addition to disabling 282 million fraudulent customer accounts and blocking 105 million developer account creations due to suspected fraudulent activity.
In 2022, the company says it rejected approximately 400,000 apps for violating privacy, where users’ personal data was being collected without authorization or knowledge. There were also another 153,000 apps that were blocked for misleading users and imitating apps already submitted. Additionally, 29,000 apps were denied entry to the App Store for using undocumented or hidden features.
Apple reported on its struggle with lack of security and privacy saying:
In more than one case this year, App Review has detected apps using malicious code with the potential to steal user credentials for third-party services. In other cases, the App Review team identified multiple apps that masqueraded as innocuous financial management platforms, but had the ability to morph into another app.
Nearly 24,000 apps were blocked or removed from the App Store for bait and switch violations like these in 2022.
