For the first time since 2010, Samsung did not end the year as the world’s largest smartphone seller. The South Korean manufacturer has been overtaken by Apple. In 2023, more than one in five smartphones sold worldwide was an iPhone.

In 2023, the overall smartphone sales market would have fallen by 3.2%, with 1.166 billion devices sold compared to 1.205 billion a year earlier, according to IDC. Apple would have sold 234.6 million iPhones, compared to 226.3 million in 2022, an increase of 3.7%. The American manufacturer especially benefited from record sales in the 4th quarter, with more than 80 million iPhones sold in three months, for a market share of 24.7%.

Unlike Apple, Samsung had a difficult year, marked by a 13.6% drop in sales, going from 262.2 to 226.6 million models sold during the year. Three Chinese manufacturers follow: Xiaomi (145.9 M, -4.7%), Oppo (103.1 M, -9.9%) and the surprising Transsion (94.9 M, +30.8%).

The last time a manufacturer other than Samsung held first place in the smartphone market was in 2010, and it was… Nokia.

According to IDC analysts, Apple’s success is largely due to the continued growth of high-end devices, which now represent more than 20% of the market, aggressive trade-in offers and plans to interest-free financing. Note that a recovery in overall smartphone sales is expected in 2024, an improvement from which Apple should inevitably benefit.
