Apple asks India to exclude old iPhones from law requiring USB-C

2023-12-05 14:17:30

When the European Union’s initiative to force smartphone manufacturers to use a universal connector (read: USB-C) on their smartphones began to take shape, much was said regarding the possibility of this idea also spreading to other countries and regions, “cornering” companies like Apple — which, until the recently launched iPhones 15, still insisted on the outdated Lightning standard.

All said and done: now, whoever is looking to implement their own set of rules in favor of USB-C on mobile devices is Indiawhich even intends to make them come into force in June 2025 — six months following the EU rules, which will come into force in December next year.

Apple, as expected, is not very happy with this idea, although it has already started to adopt the most modern connector on its smartphones. According to information from Archyde.comthe company recently asked the Asian country’s government to make an exception to the rule for existing iPhone models, which would save it from having to make adjustments to its designs just to include a USB-C port.

The Cupertino giant claims that, if these rules continue as they are, it will not be able to achieve the goals of the prime minister’s government’s production-linked incentive scheme (PLI). Narendra Modi. This scheme, more specifically, grants tax incentives to companies that increase their investments in the region and has been widely used by Apple partner companies, such as Foxconn.

This concern from Apple is mainly due to the fact that sales in the Indian market tend to be driven, for the most part, by older iPhone models, due to their lower prices. As only the company’s most recent smartphones have left the Lightning port behind, the production bottleneck caused by this Indian government initiative might directly affect Apple’s performance in the country.

According to the American giant, if an exception is not established, it will take at least 18 months beyond 2024 to adapt its production to include a USB-C port in devices launched before the iPhones 15. Apple further explained that “ a natural transition period needs to be given,” according to the minutes of the meeting with Indian government representatives in which this issue was discussed.

A Archyde.com he even questioned Apple and the Indian government regarding this negotiation, but neither party wanted to give an answer. However, according to people familiar with the matter, the country’s information technology minister, Aswini Vaishnawwould have promised to analyze the company’s request and publish a decision in the future.
